the great gatsby.

This. Will. Be. Epic.

I don't know if you have heard, but Baz Luhrmann (director of Romeo + Juliet and Moulin Rouge) is set to direct the latest onscreen adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald's classic, The Great Gatsby. I secretly loved that book when I read it in high school, but of course, you're not supposed to like anything you're forced to do -- it's the mandatory teenager-defies-authority thing. Anyway, my excitement goes beyond the simple fact that this movie is being made. As if that weren't enough, the cast is unbelievable.

Leonardo DiCaprio (Luhrmann's Romeo) will be playing Jay Gatsby, while his real life best friend Tobey Maguire has been tapped for the role of protagonist Nick Carraway. Carey Mulligan was just offered the role of leading lady Daisy Buchanan, a part that many actresses have been campaigning for. I was assuming Blake Lively would be offered the part since she was spotted having dinner with Leo and Baz a few weeks ago, but I can honestly say I'm pleased that she didn't, despite being a fan of hers (I don't think she's ready to carry this type of film yet). They're still casting for other roles, but my mind is running a million miles a minute imaging all of the possible angles Luhrmann might take.

Many are saying that a classic novel of this magnitude does not need to be remade, but it's making big news around Hollywood. Are there any books that you're hoping are made (or remade) on the big screen?
