holy batman [part 2].

The biggest movie news to come out of this week is Chris Nolan's announcement (finally) that Tom Hardy, who has long been attached to the next installment of the Batman series, will be playing Bane, the South African ex-convict with "abnormal strength" who infamously broke Batman's back. Oh, let us not forget the other part of the announcement: Anne Hathaway will be playing Selina Kyle (alter ego - Catwoman).

Big, big news. And definitely an interesting way to cap off the series, as Nolan has said this will be his last Batman film. No confirmation on whether Anne will actually appear as Catwoman throughout the movie, but this sets up a potential spin-off. Personally, although I'm surprised by this casting, I actually like it quite a lot -- and I can see where Chris was going with this. She's a statuesque brunette, and the only skepticism is whether or not she possesses enough sex appeal to be Catwoman. I say yes -- she did a phenomenal job in Love and Other Drugs. And here's hoping she looks as awesome as Halle Berry did in her catsuit (despite the sucky movie). Anne was on the shortlist of actresses considered for the lead female role, and I said before that my vote went to either her or Natalie Portman.

As for Tom Hardy: he is perfect. I mentioned that in the last post -- he stole every scene in Inception, and I have no doubts that he and Chris Nolan can create magic again. I've seen a few critics cast him off as being too much of a "pretty boy," and yes, he's had his fair share of romantic roles (Wuthering Heights, anyone?), but he's also bulked up to play a wrestler in Bronson. He has just enough crazy. People said many of the same things about Heath Ledger, and look at the legacy he left with The Dark Knight.

Anne is already an A-list star, and Tom is definitely one to watch. He topped practically every list of breakout stars of 2010, and he's got so many projects lined up this year. In addition to The Dark Knight Rises, I'm most excited about The Wettest County in the World, in which he'll be starring alongside Shia LaBeouf in a 1920s prohibition thriller (one of my favorite settings -- a la Public Enemies and Boardwalk Empire). My new male celebrity crush joins another :)

The Dark Knight Rises will be released July of next year, so shooting should begin in the near future. Are you excited? What do you think about Chris Nolan's/Warner Bros. choices?
