In a genius coupling of social media and philanthropy in our celeb-crazy world, TwitChange is the first global celebrity auction. Rather than winning an item worn by your idol or a chance at a date, hopefuls are bidding on a chance to win a tweet or a follow back from a celeb; some celebs have gone even further, offering phonecalls or other prizes. The benefits from the auction go directly toward building permanent housing for orphans in Haiti.
All sorts of celebrities from all ends of the entertainment world have joined in, from teen stars like Justin Bieber and Demi Lovato, to reality stars, athletes, actors, singers, models, rappers... you name it. If you know how often (and sometimes how desperate) fans are to get recognition from their favorite famous people on Twitter, then you know the opportunity that exists with this project. So much money can be made to help Haiti, and it's a simple way for celebrities to use their fame for a good cause. It also goes to show just how powerful Twitter and social media has become in strengthening the direct connection between celebrities/brands and their fanbase.
Anyone can bid (including businesses hoping to get exposure to large audiences!) on the celeb of their choice... or, if you have too many celebrity crushes--just like me :)--you can skip the auction and donate directly! The auction opened September 15th and goes through the 25th. You should definitely check it out.
